The Grand (1997)
Synopsis
The Grand is an ITV television drama series created and written by Russell T Davies and starring Rebecca Callard, Tim Healy, Susan Hampshire, Paul Warriner, and Mark McGann. Following WWI, the Bannerman family re-opens the Grand Hotel after a lengthy closure and a costly re-furbishing. The hotel has been in the family for a long time, and John Bannerman and his wife Sarah desperately want to make a go. Their son Stephen has returned from the wars without any physical harm but still suffers from the mental anguish of seeing so many of his comrades-in-arms falling on the battlefield. When they learn that their accountant has squandered what little money they had left, they must turn to John's brother Marcus, a successful businessman who has eschewed any interest in the hotel over the years but now seems ready to plunge into the business with both feet.

Part 1
John Bannerman and his wife Sarah open the lavish Grand Hotel. They soon find their money has been embezzled and turn to John's brother Marcus who is in love with Sarah, which he is keen to rekindle in exchange for her to save the Grand.
Part 2
Marcus continues to woo his sister-in-law and sets the staff on edge. A homeless pregnant woman asks for mercy and a man with a spanking fetish and mommy issues drop in at the Grand.
Part 3
WWI veteran Stephen falls for Celia, and steals to impress her, unaware of her secret past. Esme recognises Celia, who will do anything to hide her secrets. Stephen struggles from his non-visible scars of war.
Part 4
Two of Mr Collins' son's ex-comrades show up with a plan to clear his son's name. Esme's continued patronage of Monica arouses the jealousy of other maids. Stephen and Marcus track take matters into their own hands to right a wrong.
Part 5
Adele's former schoolmate arrives, and is a naughty girl who drives the guests and staff crazy with her behaviour. Little does anyone suspect her antics are her way of acting out due to the shocking family secret she is carrying inside.
Part 6
The kind act of feeding a stray dog leads to unintended consequences. A guest asks Monica to dinner, and she ignores Miss Harkness' advice. The repercussions lead her to choose love over security, and she makes another rash decision.
Part 7
Marcus takes over her life after their engagement. The staff hold a party to distract from their obsession with Monica. After her beau must return to London, Monica finds herself in a dire situation which rapidly deteriorates.
Part 8
Convicted and sentenced to death, Monica awaits her fate. Marcus and Ruth's wedding is plagued by staff animosity, Monica's death and his desire for Sarah. A family secret is exposed when Marcus and Sarah are caught in a forbidden kiss.
